Today, families have far more choice when it comes to arranging a funeral than ever before. There is no single way to say goodbye, and many people are moving away from tradition to create something that feels more manageable, and free from unnecessary pressure. This is where a simple funeral service can offer comfort and clarity.
What Is a Simple Funeral?
A simple funeral is a straightforward service that includes the essential elements needed to care for and say goodbye to a loved one, without added formality or complexity.
It focuses on dignity, respect, and personal choice, while removing elements that may not feel necessary. This could mean a smaller service, fewer attendees, or a more relaxed approach to the day.
Cremation – The service will be held at 09:00 with a 10 minute duration, allowing for 2 pieces of music to be played and possibly a short poem or some brief words to be read. Up to 15 mourners may be in attendance.
Burial – The service will be carried out at the chosen graveside, with no formal service prior. This may be done with a minister or celebrant present, or simply family-led (a churchyard requires a vicar to be present).
You will have the option of music and/or hymns to be played, along with your chosen words to be spoken. There is no time limit on this service, however, we suggest up to 30 minutes. There is no limit on mourner numbers, however, this option is often chosen for a smaller, more intimate service.
In short, a simple funeral service keeps things meaningful, without being overwhelming.
What Does a Simple Funeral Include?
While every funeral is tailored to the family, a simple funeral will usually include:
- Bringing your loved one into care
- Preparation and dignified presentation
- A coffin suitable for cremation or burial
- Transportation to the place of committal
- Guidance and support from a funeral director
Simple Funeral vs Traditional Funeral
The main difference comes down to scale and structure.
A traditional funeral often follows a more formal format, with a set order of service, a larger gathering, and additional ceremonial elements.
A simple funeral, by contrast, allows for:
- A quieter, more private setting
- Less formality
- A focus on what feels right for the family
- A more cost effective option if you’re concerned about the cost implications

Why Do Families Choose a Simple Funeral?
There are many reasons why families choose this approach.
Some prefer a more private farewell, while others feel it reflects the personality or wishes of the person who has died. For many, it also reduces the pressure of organising a large event during an already difficult time.
If there are financial concerns with regards to a funeral service, this can offer something in between an ‘unattended’ funeral and a traditional funeral. Allowing family and close friends to be present, without the expense of a full service.
A simple funeral can also allow families to hold a separate memorial or celebration of life at a later date, when they feel ready.
Can a Simple Funeral Still Be Personal?
Yes, absolutely. Simplicity does not mean a lack of meaning.
You can still include personal touches such as:
Often, these small and thoughtful details create the most lasting memories.
